Welcome to Syros, the island where the “Eastern dawn” harmoniously converses with the “Western light,” creating a unique, aristocratic, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Known as the “nymph of the Aegean,” Syros was one of the most important islands of Cycladic civilization. Today, the rich cultural tradition of the island continues admirably with internationally renowned artistic events held every year in Ermoupoli, the capital of the island, such as the International Music Festival of the Cyclades, το the International Animated Design Festival Animasyros, το the Classical Music Festival, and the Ermoupolia, among others offering a range of options that cater to every taste, enriching the stay in Syros with unforgettable experiences.
The island is especially suited for maritime activities, as it boasts numerous stunning beaches and a rich gastronomy. The renowned halva pies and the famous loukoumia, as well as delicacies such as louza and “maratholoukanika,” will delight even the most demanding palate, while it’s worth seeking out the excellent spicy cheese called San Michali.
Exploring the Island
Ermoupoli
Undoubtedly stealing the show is Ermoupoli, the first commercial and industrial center of the country that experienced unprecedented growth during the 19th century. The city, named after the god Hermes, became densely populated and evolved into a significant commercial and industrial center of the era. Due to the island’s geographical position and the economic prosperity it experienced, its port emerged as the most important commercial and maritime center of the newly established Greek state in the 19th century. During your stay in Ermoupoli, it is important to visit the Industrial Museum housed in three buildings, summarizing the rapid economic growth of the city.
Besides its significance, Ermoupoli is one of the most beautiful Greek cities, filled with wonderful neoclassical buildings, distinctive architecture influenced by Western standards of the 19th century. Adorned with splendid public buildings such as the Town Hall, the Customs House, the Apollo Theater, as well as grand squares and neoclassical mansions, along with an outdoor architectural museum.
The city is built amphitheatrically on the hill, overlooking the Aegean. Among other things, the religious monuments of the city are also noteworthy, such as the Transfiguration of the Savior, Agios Nikolaos the Rich, and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary; imposing temples that clearly reflect the contribution of the Orthodox community to the architectural landscape of Ermoupoli.
In contrast to the Orthodox presence in modern Ermoupoli, on the hill of Agios Georgios, Upper Syros or Ano Syros, the settlement of the Catholic community develops with the typical defensive arrangement of houses around the (fortified) cathedral of San Giorgio, dominating at the top. The settlement was built in the 13th century by the Venetians. At the same location, there was a settlement dating back to the 8th century.
Today, Ano Syros, or the Upper Town, as the locals call it, retains its medieval appearance unchanged, with its labyrinthine alleys, traditional whitewashed houses, arches above the street, and narrow cobblestone streets with stairs leading to small neighborhoods. The view from the hill of Ano Syros is breathtaking. It’s worth climbing the countless steps leading to the top of the hill. It is 2 km away from Ermoupoli.
Azolimnos
A coastal village on the southeastern side of the island, with beautiful golden sandy beaches. It is the closest beach to Ermoupoli and one of the most popular on the island. It is located 5 km northeast of Ermoupoli.
Galissas
One of the most popular and cosmopolitan tourist resorts of Syros. The settlement is built in a picturesque bay, inhabited since ancient times. It’s worth climbing the hill of Agia Pakou for a view of the ruins of a small fortress and the ancient acropolis, as well as to enjoy the panoramic view of the village and the sea. It is located 9 km northwest of Ermoupoli.
Kini
One of the most picturesque and peaceful villages of Syros, with renowned fish taverns. Located on the western side of the island, next to a very beautiful sandy beach. If you prefer more secluded and tranquil beaches, choose Lotos, Barbarousa, Aetos, Grammata, or the enchanting beach of Delphini. It is located 9 km south of Ermoupoli.
Chalandriani
The area is mainly known for its significant archaeological sites, which came to light in the late 19th century from the excavations of the archaeologist Christos Tsountas. It is located 9.5 km southwest of Ermoupoli. Worth visiting is the archaeological site of Chalandriani with the early Cycladic cemetery, the prehistoric settlement, and the significant findings. You can also visit the archaeological site of Kastri, on a rocky hill, with a fortified settlement dating back to the period 2300-2200 BC. You can also make a stop at the Cave of Pherecydes, where according to tradition the philosopher Pherecydes (6th century BC) lived, and at the spring Syringa (4 km east). Its water has been famous since antiquity, while the view from the area is breathtaking.

Poseidonia (DelaGracia)
Poseidonia or DelaGracia, as the area was previously called, is the most cosmopolitan tourist resort of the island from the mid-19th century to the present day. Characteristic of the area are the many neoclassical mansions (once country houses of wealthy Syros families) with large gardens, giving the area an aristocratic elegance. DelaGracia took its name from the Catholic church of Madonna della Grazia, while its renaming to Poseidonia is owed to the ancient city of the same name that was located in this area. On the road to Ermoupoli (4 km northeast), you will encounter the traditional settlement of Parakopi with beautiful villas. It is located 13 km northwest of Ermoupoli.
Vari
Ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα χωριά του νησιού, τριγυρισμένο από καλλιεργήσιμα εδάφη, με γραφικές γειτονιές και όμορφες παραλίες. In Vari, remains of prehistoric settlements and Roman-era tombs have been found. 2.5 km southeast is the small traditional village of Chrousa. It is located 8 km north of Ermoupoli.
